Caring for Olive Trees in Pots

Olive trees can be grown in pots relatively easily - they’re not an overly demanding plant to take care of. With that said, there are a few key considerations to bear in mind. First off is drainage: olives need lots of it, so we would recommend adding a little grit to your soil to help with this. Positioning is key, too - it’s best to keep your tree in a sunny spot.

You will of course need to water a potted tree more regularly than one planted in the ground, but not too often - you mustn’t drench the soil. Instead, it should simply be kept moist and weed-free.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you recommend and sell me supplies to help me care for my tree?

Yes, absolutely! Check out our supplies section to stock up on all the crucial supplies you’ll need, and please don’t hesitate to ask us for advice if you need it.

Will olive trees in pots need protection over the winter?

If you experience prolonged periods of sub-zero temperatures, we would recommend wrapping your tree in a horticultural fleece to keep it protected. Otherwise, it will be just fine in a UK winter.

Can you grow an olive tree indoors?

Yes, although they will need to be placed in a sunny spot. Olives can live indoors quite happily, but they will always live longer and grow more quickly when kept outdoors.
